Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
Artist Harry Jelinek can be considered a worthy successor to the Expressionist avant-garde. He seeks to transcend what is perceived by the senses to extract the true essence of his vision and communicate it on canvas in a vibrant and dramatic manner. For this reason, his perception is interpreted extremely synthetically, with an almost brutal exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The brushstrokes delineate the forms in a tormented and nervous manner. Color is used according to an emotional and spiritual interpretation, without any connection to reality. This exercise in synthesis is so advanced that it almost places Jelinek's works within an informal aesthetic. Indeed, one might even call them brutalist, given the vehemence of the painterly gesture with which the artist creates his works.
Harry Jelineck was an artist of Czech origin, born in Vlašim in 1905 and died in Guarene d'Alba, Italy, in 1986. The son of a well-known Austrian doctor, he was forced by his father to complete a classical education and enroll at university. In 1919, during a trip to Paris, he met George Braque, Pablo Picasso, and Amedeo Modigliani, and was impressed by the Italian's painting. After experimenting with Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism, he formulated new theories such as Quintalism and Perceptibilism and their application in painting. He held solo exhibitions and participated in group shows and art exhibitions in Italy and major European cities, receiving prestigious prizes and awards, including the Diplomatic Press Gold Medal in 1975. the Europa Prize at the Campidoglio in Rome, the 1975 Europa International Academy Award for Art in London, and many others. His works are held in public and private collections.
