Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," meaning to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images. In sculpture, too, several artists have adopted an abstract language, which can manifest itself in biomorphic or mechanomorphic creations, such as this work. Indeed, in this sculpture by Helidon Xhixha, the reference to a rationalist aesthetic of pure forms and volumes is evident.
In his sculptural research, artist Helidon Xhixha alternates more expressionistic phases with others inspired by the beauty of pure forms. The artist thus proceeds to reconstruct his perception and his message, following a mechanomorphic process. Form is condensed into regular, mirrored surfaces, which multiply the interplay of sharp edges and, consequently, the decomposition and reconstruction of reality. In this particular work, Xhixha also plays with different semantic levels of the image. The title suggests a key interpretation, which sees this regular solid of vertical slabs as a reference to the World Trade Center and the September 11 attacks. In Xhixha's creative composition, the solid itself becomes a sort of American flag.
Helidon Xhixha is an Albanian artist born in Durrës in 1970. He spent his childhood in his father Sali's art studio, where he learned about fine art and developed a particular passion for sculpture. In 1998, Xhixha received a scholarship from Kingston University in London, where he dedicated himself to perfecting his technical skills in engraving, sculpture, and photography. The following year, he graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. The artist actively experiments with different materials and innovative techniques to create works of art in Murano glass and stainless steel sculptures. His works are increasingly acclaimed in the international art world, attracting enthusiasts and collectors from Italy, Germany, France, England, Switzerland, Austria, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.
