Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships, or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.
Although based on an interpretation rooted in phenomenal reality, Herman Conrad nevertheless executed his naval battle scenes with strong expressionistic hues to lend greater drama to the subject. The scene is entirely compressed in the foreground, leaving no room for any depth. The bulk of the sailing ship occupies almost the entire surface of the painting. Furthermore, the painter uses a mixed technique, so the brushstrokes are looser in some areas, capturing every detail, while in others (especially when depicting the waves crashing against the vessel's hull) they become quicker and more cursory. The color palette is vibrant, again to accentuate the excitement of the scene.
Herman Conrad was born in Naples in 1935. A primarily figurative painter, he possesses an excellent academically trained technique. His research has focused primarily on the theme of naval battles, of which he has composed numerous variations. His works are distinguished by the expressive and lively manner in which he depicts adventurous clashes on the high seas.
