Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
This work is part of Hermann Walenta's Informal production. The entire creative process of the painting is guided by a powerful gesturality, expressed through various layers: broad strokes, thin streaks, and drips. These are pure emotions and spirituality transformed into gesture and matter. This exuberant emotionality, however, is governed by a certain sense of chromatic and compositional balance.
Hermann Walenta (Drosndorf, Thaya 1923–2018 Riegersburg). His entire pictorial production was characterized by a strong experimental tension that saw him pass through various phases, from abstraction to fully informal results.
