Description of the work
Description of the work
The Most Serene Republic of Venice was also the only republic throughout its history to succeed where states and legal systems of all times and all parts of the world had failed: that is, in establishing a counterweight of values and forces so well balanced that it staved off coups d'état and revolution for over a millennium. The figure of the Doge was an emblematic expression of the extraordinary political and economic balance that led the Republic of Venice to assert itself as a power over the centuries. Through the figure of the Doge and his transformations over a thousand years of history, this volume reconstructs the events of the only Italian republic that, between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, was capable and conscious of embodying the legacy of the ancient Roman Senate. The text is accompanied by over two hundred illustrations and prints from Italy, Germany, France, England, and Flemish, many of which have never been published before. The volume is in folio format, measuring 32 x 42 cm, and contains 280 pages, approximately 250 engravings and drawings, and three antique tipped-in prints. The fine leather binding features an embossed cover, metal studs on the back, a ribbed spine, and pure gold embossing. The slipcase features handmade printed paper panels.
