Description of the work
URBINATE LATINO 365 The marvelous manuscript of the Divine Comedy commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, is revived for this occasion in a new guise, thanks to the collaboration between Franco Cosimo Panini , the Vatican Library, and Treccani, who have created an edition entirely faithful to the finest copy of the work. From the colorful illuminations to the refined binding, this celebratory edition recalls the precious details of the original codex, archived as Urbinate Latino 365. Around 1475, the duke commissioned Matteo Contugi, a renowned copyist in the service of the most important Renaissance courts, and Guglielmo Girardi, an illuminator of the Ferrarese school, to produce a rich and prestigious edition of the Comedy for the shelves of his court library. Following the duke's death, production was interrupted. Revived in the early 17th century thanks to the intervention of Francesco Maria II della Rovere, the last Duke of Urbino, who entrusted its completion to the miniaturist Valerio Mariani. Thus was born one of the most refined illuminated manuscripts of the Divine Comedy. Enriched with a red velvet binding and gilded baroque decorations, it is now preserved in the Vatican Apostolic Library. Panini reproduced it in a limited edition of 590 copies, only 550 of which were intended for sale, identical to those produced by the artisan workshops of the time. The volume, which can be purchased on the Franco Cosimo Panini website, is composed of 594 pages, with the first three pages richly decorated, 117 miniatures, and 100 large initials.
