Description of the work
Description of the work
This is a finely edited volume containing one of the most celebrated works by the renowned Florentine writer Giovanni Boccaccio, the Decamoron, composed between 1349 and 1353. This narrative is considered one of the absolute masterpieces of Italian literature and medieval narrative. The title "Decameron" derives from the Greek and means "ten days." The work, in fact, recounts one hundred short stories told by ten young people, seven women and three men, who take refuge in a villa just outside Florence to escape the Black Death sweeping through the Tuscan city. The structure is designed so that every day, except Friday and Saturday, one of the main characters indicates a theme and then each of the ten young people must tell a story, for a total of ten stories per day, thus bringing the total to one hundred stories in ten days. The stories told during these days cover a wide range of themes, including love, fortune, intelligence, and so on, ranging stylistically from the tragic to the comic, precisely to underscore the complexity of social and personal relationships. In the edition we see, the publisher has divided the work into two volumes, each featuring two different illustrations on the cover, choosing to depict two episodes from the Decameron. The cover is made of aluminum embossed from a bronze plate. The uniqueness of the volume stems precisely from the value of the illustrated cover, which further enhances the value of Giovanni Boccaccio's work.
