Description of the work
Description of the work
The Borgia Missal, also known as the "Medici Missal," one of the most significant liturgical manuscripts of the 15th century, is being released for the first time from the archives of the Archbishop's Curia of Chieti, where it has been preserved for centuries. Vallecchi is publishing this precious facsimile edition in a limited edition. This authentic work of art is enriched by splendid miniatures, which, beyond their artistic and religious aspects, reveal rare iconographic testimonies to historical and cultural events of particular importance for the era. The original text, written in Gothic script, is accompanied by a commentary by leading scholars of the manuscript, clarifying its meaning, illustrating the miniatures, and helping to place the work's context within its origins. This is a fascinating journey through time for those who wish to relive the emotions of a bygone world and secure a unique edition destined to become a rare volume sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
A masterpiece worthy of a Pope.
The Borgia Missal was commissioned in the late 15th century by Giovanni Borgia, nephew of Pope Alexander VI, to celebrate his appointment as cardinal. It is one of the earliest surviving festive missals, drawn up according to the ceremonial norms of 1488. Due to its important function, it had to be produced by expert calligraphers and richly decorated: a true masterpiece of illuminated manuscript art. The book is believed to have been part of the Sistine Chapel codices, reserved exclusively for the Pope, cardinals, and high prelates of the Church for the solemn Masses sung in the papal chapel.
