Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

For Ilario Rossi, a Bolognese painter, Giorgio Morandi's teachings were crucial to his conception of landscape. For Rossi, too, phenomenal reality must be synthesized, reduced to its essence, to leave in the painting what truly matters, the true vital traces of the perceptible world. Thus, in an operation similar to that of the great master, Rossi achieves an almost neoplastic reconstruction of the landscape, striving for a flat, two-dimensional geometrical structure constructed through bands of color. Everything is transfigured by light, and the highly synthetic brushstrokes delineate objects and figures charged with existential vibrations.

Ilario Rossi was a Bolognese painter and printmaker, born in 1911 and died in 1994. He learned his passion and the rudiments of drawing from his father Ferdinando, a wood sculptor and art school teacher. His education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where he studied engraving under Giorgio Morandi, was crucial. He had a prolific career and exhibited his work at numerous events. He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and International Art Exhibition, and the Rome Quadrennial.
