Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figure, through a very nervous and animated line. There is a remarkable synthesis that compresses the figure into a two-dimensional plane, yet at the same time makes it much stronger from an expressive point of view. This also applies to the choice of rather aggressive color tones, which find their counterpart in the historical expressionist avant-garde of Fauvism.
Irene Ugolini Zoli was an artist originally from Forlì, where she was born in 1910 and passed away in 1998. From the 1950s onwards, she devoted herself assiduously to painting. Her first exhibition took place in Milan in 1953. In 1956, she made her debut in her hometown, followed by several exhibitions throughout Romagna. In 1957, she enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and entered various competitions. In 1971, she exhibited in Paris. In 1979, during a stay in Sydney, she created a graffiti work for the S. Francesco Preschool in Leichardt.
