Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal depictions in art have ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era.
This lithograph is a beautiful example of animal representations by sculptor Isa Pizzoni. Pizzoni's graphic work is closely linked to her sculpture in the sense of research and exploration of the subject's plastic qualities. While in her sculptures, volumes are highlighted by a marked rhythm of curved forms, in her lithographs, the graphic sign emphasizes the volumes with a marked linearity. The subject is formed by an intricate interweaving of signs that synthesizes its forms in a remarkably expressive manner.
Isa Pizzoni was a sculptor originally from Erba, born in 1921 and died in 2008. She trained at the Brera Academy and was a student of Marino Marini. In 1953, thanks to a scholarship, she moved to Paris, where she came into contact with the Cubist movement. From 1954 onwards, she organised various exhibitions, especially at the Galleria il Milione in Milan. She also held several exhibitions abroad, including those in Brussels in 1960 and 1962.
