Description of the work
Description of the work
Ivan Dimitrov was born in 1958 in Bulgaria and, while still a teenager, arrived in Bologna where he completed his art studies.
In the years that followed, as curiosity drove him to travel to art cities in Italy, Europe, and the world, a close bond with Bologna began to emerge, one that would prove to be a constant and inexhaustible source of inspiration over time. It was precisely the Bolognese school of terracotta, along with its characteristic artistic expressions such as the small sculptures of Cleto Tomba, that immediately influenced Dimitrov's creativity. In the 1970s, he exhibited his small and medium-sized terracotta sculptures nationwide, in shows held in Florence, Naples, and Milan (to name the most important).
80s, 90s and 2000s
In the 1980s, in Bologna, Dimitrov opened his own studio, open to the public, where he exhibited his works. A decade later, also in Bologna, he began a collaboration, still very much alive, with the Galleria Studio Santo Stefano , where Dimitrov's works are permanently exhibited.
It was during these years that his bond with the Emilian city became even deeper: Dimitrov collaborated with the central Santo Stefano district in the organization of artistic and cultural events dedicated to young people and in 1998, together with Piero Ruggeri and Roberto Dalfiume, he promoted the exhibition/competition for young cartoonists Fumetto e Illustrazione , an event which, with its own organizing committee, continued in the following years under the title Arena!.
In the same period he began a cycle of personal exhibitions characterised by thematic displays: The Nativity, the “Homages to the Great Masters”, the Theatre and the Circus, the view paintings dedicated to Bologna.
Recent times
The growing interest in these events, witnessed by tens of thousands of visitors, gave Ivan Dimitrov's name national prominence, so much so that in 2011 he was invited to join the historic Francesco Francia Association for the Arts (which boasts among its members the greatest exponents of art in Bologna and the history of art in Italy) and in 2014 he received the prestigious commission from the Municipality of Siena to paint the banner of the Palio dell'Assunta , a task that over the years has been entrusted to artists such as Botero, Fiume, Mitoraj and Guttuso.
At the same time, in addition to various collaborations, including with museums, he continues his activity related to personal exhibitions and, in collaboration with the Studio Santo Stefano gallery, organizes Nativity , an exhibition-event that, with more than three hundred terracotta sculptures and thousands of visitors from all over Italy, becomes a key event of the Bolognese Christmas.
The days our
In 2018, the very rich production of terracotta bas-reliefs dedicated to Bologna was collected in an anthological exhibition, entitled Bologna, a city in the heart , which aroused the interest of numerous visitors well beyond the borders of the Emilian capital, so much so that it was subsequently proposed – expanded and integrated with new works and with the title “Under the sign of the porticoes” – as one of the cultural events that accompanied the candidacy process of the porticoes of Bologna as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2020-21).
While his artistic curiosity led him to express himself in new directions such as bronzes, etchings, oil paintings and ceramics, his works are permanently exhibited in churches and museums and at the Galleria Studio Santo Stefano in Bologna.
The publications
The works of Ivan Dimitrov are collected in a series of valuable collectible monographic volumes, created and printed according to the canons of the best artisan typographic tradition, full of high quality photographs reproduced in colour.
