Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Painter Ivan Karpoff displays a highly lyrical vision of landscape in his works. This romanticism translates into colorful impastos through which objects blend into space, creating a warm and enveloping atmosphere. The prevalence of color creates a certain degree of synthesis found in a formal, cursive style inspired by Impressionism.
Ivan Karpoff was a Russian-born painter also known as F. Dessi. Born in Novocherkassk in 1898, he began his education in his home country. After the war, he won a scholarship that allowed him to move to Milan, where he graduated from the Brera Academy under the guidance of Ambrogio Alciati. He became very popular for his work, which combined a typically Slavic sensibility with Lombard landscapes. He died in Milan in 1970.
