Description of the work
Description of the work
Social themes in art began to gain prominence in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the spread of social questions throughout European societies. The work of painters such as Millet and Daumier, for example, favored subjects related to life in the fields, factory work, or strikes. In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso. Ivo Soli's sculptures are often inspired by popular figures.
In his sculptures, Ivo Soli draws on a classical and traditional conception of artistic creation. As we can see in this work, the sculptor pursues a naturalistic rendering, which he achieves through his remarkable technique. The artist manages to emphasize the subject's volumes, creating a balanced relationship within the work. There is, however, a certain abstraction in the physiognomy. Indeed, to achieve greater expressiveness, Ivo Soli, while remaining within the realm of naturalism, employs slight but noticeable deformations of the human figure. This gives the figure a certain essential, rarefied quality, introducing a strong contemporary connotation to Ivo Soli's sculptural practice.
Ivo Soli (Spilamberto, July 8, 1898 – Vignola, 1979) was an Italian sculptor. He moved with his family to Vignola, where he was apprenticed in a blacksmith's shop. He then went to study in Modena, but in 1917 he was called up for service in the First World War. After his discharge, he completed his sculpture studies in 1921 and went to Milan to teach sculpture and composition at the Brera School of Art. In 1931 he participated in the first Rome Quadrennial, in 1934 in the Venice Biennale, and again in the 1936, 1940, and 1948 editions. In 1957 he participated in the Third National Exhibition of Sacred Art at the Angelicum in Milan. He also participated in numerous exhibitions throughout Europe.
