Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, has no significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist John F. Pasmore is a leading exponent of 19th-century English genre scenes. His subjects are extremely popular, set in the rural suburbs of the English countryside. Often, as in this painting, Pasmore combines genre scenes with a penchant for depicting animals, which become the protagonists of his works. This work was also exhibited at Christie's Gallery in London, presented under the title "A Girl Feeding a Dog."
Stylistically, John F. Pasmore's paintings adhere to the canons of 19th-century English genre painting. Indeed, his painting style is distinguished by what can be considered a sort of slightly idealized realism. In short, the subjects reflect a popular context, both in terms of settings and clothing, but this is reworked by the painter into a highly classical and academic pictorial conception. Indeed, the paintings display marked characteristics of compositional harmony and naturalistic rendering, thanks in part to the artist's extraordinary technique. John F. Pasmore's style is distinguished not only by its descriptive precision but also by a certain predilection for a plasticity of swollen, rounded forms. The scenes are often set in the evocative dim light of interiors, in which the artist develops evocative light effects. His hand, however, displays a very loose brushstroke that lends vivacity to the execution, perfectly in keeping with the popular nature of the subject.
Little biographical information is available about the artist John F. Pasmore, but what is certain is that he was active between 1841 and 1866. He was one of the most important representatives of the 19th-century English popular genre scene. His works intertwine playful scenes set in the English countryside with beautiful depictions of animals.
