The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. It dates back to the classical world, and the oldest example is the "Rampin Rider," a masterpiece of archaic Greece. Equestrian monuments were of fundamental importance to Roman art, including from a political perspective. Generally, they are sculptures in the round, but there are also cases where this subject appears on painted supports or genre prints. The theme of the man on horseback has pervaded the entire history of art, not only Western art, and has become a focus of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu.

Ridinger's engravings are created with a noble didactic purpose, and for this reason, their execution is expressed through refined drawings that depict every detail with meticulous precision. The author perfectly depicts both clothing and trappings, as well as every single element of vegetation and landscape. There is a conventional, idealized quality, typical of this type of illustration. This idealization can be found in the statuesque forms of horses and riders and their stately postures. The shadows are created with extremely fine hatching and, nevertheless, lend a certain vitality to the illustration.

The series of engravings was undertaken by Johann Elias Redinger, born in Ulm in 1698 and died in Augsburg in 1767. He was a renowned engraver specializing in animal reproductions, equestrian groups, and hunting scenes. He stood out for his excellent didactic realism and the refinement of his illustrative technique.
