Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this print may be connected to the genre of Vedutismo. Vedutismo originated in the 18th century and developed primarily in Venice. Vedutismo painters aimed to represent a landscape objectively and scientifically, placing it as the protagonist of the work. There are essentially two types of vedute: the realistic one, taken exactly from reality, and the "capriccio," a fanciful view invented by the painter. Vedutismo is a genre that continues to enjoy popularity in artistic production, revived by artists in new forms and new interpretations. It has also become particularly popular in printmaking, where depictions of city views or other buildings abound, emphasizing the architectural element within a rigorous perspective.
A member of the Gothic Revival, Joseph Nash was an exemplary representative of Romantic artists' interest in the Middle Ages. Indeed, his favorite subjects were English castles and genre scenes inspired by that era. For this reason, Nash's prints fully uphold their high illustrative and didactic commitment to capturing architectural views or interiors in every minute detail. His technique is extraordinary, in its rigorous perspective (Nash's interiors are veritable spatial boxes set on diagonal vanishing points) and in its ability to capture every detail of buildings, furniture, and accessories. The beauty of Nash's works lies precisely in their ability to narrate, albeit idealized, a bygone era with extraordinary technique, in keeping with the Romantic vision of the Middle Ages.
Joseph Nash was born in Great Marlow in 1809 and died in London in 1878. A member of the Gothic Revival, he was a watercolourist and lithographer specializing in historic buildings and genre scenes. His major work was the four volumes of Mansions of England in the Olden Time, published from 1839 to 1849.
