Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Joseph Nash is famous for his lithographs inspired by a Romantic Middle Ages.
A member of the Gothic Revival, Joseph Nash was an exemplary representative of Romantic artists' interest in the Middle Ages. Indeed, his favorite subjects were English castles and genre scenes inspired by that era. For this reason, Nash's prints fully uphold their high illustrative and didactic commitment to capturing architectural views or interiors in every minute detail. His technique is extraordinary, in its rigorous perspective (Nash's interiors are veritable spatial boxes set on diagonal vanishing points) and in its ability to capture every detail of buildings, furniture, and accessories. The beauty of Nash's works lies precisely in their ability to narrate, albeit idealized, a bygone era with extraordinary technique, in keeping with the Romantic vision of the Middle Ages.
Joseph Nash was born in Great Marlow in 1809 and died in London in 1878. A member of the Gothic Revival, he was a watercolourist and lithographer specializing in historic buildings and genre scenes. His major work was the four volumes of Mansions of England in the Olden Time, published from 1839 to 1849.
