Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, and Puvis des Chavannes, who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic, allegorical, and, in particular, literary references. Many of Josefina Castellanos's works, similarly, draw inspiration from Spanish chivalric literature, with particular references to the Don Quixote saga.
In her paintings, artist Josefina Castellanos reveals a highly creative Symbolist and Expressionist streak. Iconographically, it's clear that these are subjects that have no claim to representing reality, but rather to convey intellectual messages, full of cultural references. While the interpretation recalls Symbolism, the execution of the painting further leans toward Expressionism, due to the remarkable synthesis of the interpretation. The subjects are delineated in a simple manner, while the application of color is gestural, especially in the depiction of dynamic atmospheres, reaching a heightened pictorialism with highly expressive effects. Thus, the scene seems almost dematerialized into a two-dimensional surface, where the relief is provided exclusively by the vibrant paint, giving the work a visionary quality.
Josefina Castellanos was born in Calasparra, Murcia, Spain. She has lived in Venezuela since 1965. In her paintings, she alternates more traditional subjects, such as flowers or landscapes, with more sophisticated ones, inspired by Spanish history and literature. Throughout her career, she has participated in numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally.
