Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Croatian artist Josip Skerly drew inspiration primarily from popular genre scenes.
Josip Skerly stands out for his decidedly expressionist language. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its emotional states to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of figures, through a highly nervous and lively line, as well as the use of a strong color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism, such as Fauvism and the Die Brücke movement in Germany. Thus, Skerly's figurative work also seeks to forcefully express the primary values of simple yet intense existences. He does so with a highly energetic and lively line that synthesizes the figures according to a rhythm of broken lines. Unlike historical Expressionism, Skerly's use of a sparse palette of earthy and brown tones prevails, in keeping with the essentiality of the representation.
Croatian artist Josip Škerlj is a painter and poet, storyteller and writer of local themes and loves, he is a colorist and a well-known Dubrovnik personality
