Jovan Vulic - Roofs of Rome

The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In Jovan Vulic's city views, as in the present work, the everyday aspect prevails, the frank and sincere realism of everyday life in a city setting.

In this work, we can appreciate how painter Jovan Vulic's style is based on a perfect expressive balance between naturalistic rendering and coloristic synthesis. Indeed, the urban view appears in all its naturalness and authenticity, thanks to the artist's flawless technique, which manages to depict every detail with vivacity and a sense of plasticity. The buildings appear vibrant with life, thanks to his masterful use of color, which diffuses a soft nocturnal light, punctuated by a few sudden flashes of light inside the buildings. What is particularly admirable is how the buildings, thanks to the subtlest transitions of tone, fade into the last light of day.

Jovan Vulic was born in Beji, Yugoslavia, in 1951 and lives and works in Rome. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade and later moved to Italy, to Venice and Rome, where he studied with Montanarini, Gentilizi, and Fazzini. Since 1990, he has collaborated with Spazio Arte La Maddalena. In Italy, he has held numerous solo exhibitions, receiving considerable public and critical acclaim.
