Jovan Vulic - Vase of Flowers

Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.

In this work, we can appreciate how painter Jovan Vulic's style is based on a perfect expressive balance between naturalistic rendering and coloristic synthesis. Indeed, the figure in the vase of flowers appears in all its naturalness and authenticity, thanks to the artist's flawless technique, which manages to depict every detail with vivacity and a sense of plasticity. The flowers appear vibrant with life, thanks to a brilliant polychrome of warm colors, balanced with occasional touches of white. The figure's surface is shaded in the light, thus appearing vibrant with life. At the same time, however, the artist achieves a marked formal synthesis: in the space surrounding the subject, the pictorial layering becomes more expressionistic, determined by gestural interventions of dynamic brush strokes.

Jovan Vulic was born in Beji, Yugoslavia, in 1951 and lives and works in Rome. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade and later moved to Italy, to Venice and Rome, where he studied with Montanarini, Gentilizi, and Fazzini. Since 1990, he has collaborated with Spazio Arte La Maddalena. In Italy, he has held numerous solo exhibitions, receiving considerable public and critical acclaim.
