Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts a large, stylized face encompassing multiple scenes. The figures, distributed throughout the different spaces, depict female bodies, horses, and groups of people, in a pattern reminiscent of mythical or symbolic tales. The choice to concentrate so many images in a single form creates the effect of a fragmented narrative, as if the artist wanted to represent multiple stories and memories that, however, come together in a single image.
The silkscreen highlights the strength of the line and the balanced use of color. The figures are essential, with sharp contours that emphasize their presence rather than detail. The composition is studied: the artist organizes the different scenes within a single form, creating a balance between solids and voids. The lines are so interwoven that they construct and define the work's figures. Kattinis's style has often been described as "Ancestral Expressionism," combining the formal synthesis of the European avant-garde (with references to masters such as Picasso) with dreamlike and mythical elements, recalling his Mediterranean origins and profound spirituality. His figures, sometimes mask-like, as in this case, convey an intimate dramatic force.
Julianos Kattinis (Damascus, 1934) is a painter of Greek origin who lives and works in Rome. Born in Syria to Greek parents, he spent his childhood in various Middle Eastern countries, coming into contact with diverse cultures early on. After his first exhibitions in Damascus and Beirut, he moved to Europe in 1961, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and participated in the Venice Biennale (1964). In 1972, the Palazzo Braschi Museum hosted a major solo exhibition of his work, which confirmed his artistic maturity. A master of painting and engraving techniques, he has exhibited in Italy and abroad, created murals and frescoes, and received numerous awards; his works are held in international museums and collections, including the Albertina in Vienna and Palazzo Braschi in Rome.
