Description of the work
Description of the work
The aesthetics of Karl Lagasse's works, and particularly those from his Dollar Series, straddle the lines of Pop Art and the poetics of the object. The work is inspired by the quintessential symbol of consumption, transformed into a work of art. In his artistic practice, therefore, the object itself, a massified emblem of consumer society, becomes a work recontextualized by the artist. At the same time, all this presupposes a meditation on the styles of mass communication and the language of advertising, which places Karl Lagasse's research within the realm of Pop Art.
Even in the dollar series, we can see how different aesthetics and visual languages overlap in Karl Lagasse's work. A key element is the banknote, a mass-produced object par excellence, reworked by the artist in an extraordinary pop style. It is transformed into a sculpture that artificially imitates its folds and wear on a deliberately fake, reflective surface. This sculptural reworking is also overlaid with the artist's gesture, which, in keeping with the poetics of New Dada, dirties the object, transforming it into a unique work.
Acclaimed artist Karl Lagasse rose to prominence in 2009 with his “One Dollar” sculptures. Karl began his artistic journey with collages when he was 7 years old. That same year, he met French artist César Baldaccini, who inspired Karl to continue developing his work. He ventured into the Paris subway, where tagging and graffiti became his predominant creative medium. However, his collages remained his true passion. His first solo exhibition featuring his “Building” sculptures was in 2006 at the Isy Brachot Gallery in Brussels. Karl has exhibited his work worldwide, including: Art Monaco 2011 with the Bel Air Fine Art gallery; a 2012 solo exhibition with the Artco France gallery; and in 2016, he inaugurated the Gallery Atrium in Marbella, Spain. In 2017 and 2018, the American Film Festival of Deauville chose Karl Lagasse to create its trophy.
