Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.

As we can see from an analysis of this painting, the painter Karl Von Laufen is an artist who begins with tangible reality and then transforms the subject in an expressionistic manner. Indeed, the depiction of this mother and child has a strong realistic connotation, free of idealization, filled with sincerity and even raw truth. However, the subject undergoes some anti-naturalistic distortions to become more expressive: thus, the physiognomic features become more generalized and enlarged, shifting the figure from the plane of reality to that of the symbol. The meanings assumed by the subject broaden and become broader. This expressive characterization is also contributed to by Von Laufen's pictorial approach, which features the use of highly textured colors. Another distinctive feature is the chromatic choice, recurrent in this painter, of toning the entire surface of the painting in brown tones.
Artist Karl Von Laufen is the protagonist of an interesting stylistic exploration. He begins with tangible reality but distorts it in an expressionistic manner. All of this is elaborated according to this artist's highly original vision, which includes the use of textured painting and a predominance of brown tones.
