Description of the work
Description of the work
The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, which resulted in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly linked to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material with which they compose their works. Even the research
Katia Rota's work is inspired by informal poetics, yet interpreted in a completely original way.
The style of Trieste-born painter Katia Rota is grounded in a highly synthesised process that leads her to abstract phenomenal reality to the point of achieving results that can be ascribed to the poetics of Informal Art. This is evident in these "Skyscrapers," in which the artist, even through the title, still leaves a trace for the viewer to maintain a connection with the subject, but the execution is entirely resolved in a powerfully expressionist and abstract manner. The absolute protagonist is the pictorial gesture, which, together with the dense color matter, becomes the artist's primary means of expression. Thus, the faint trace of perceptible reality, which could still be discerned in an almost elusive skyline, is fully identified with the painter's gesture, expressed in broad, vertical brushstrokes. The same occurs with the atmosphere and the reflections on the surface of the water: everything is transfigured into the expressive power of pure pictorial matter, thanks to the painter's skill in modulating it and rendering it chromatically dynamic.
Katia Rota is an artist who lives and works in Trieste. Her extensive training has included a degree in art history and courses in painting techniques, mural restoration, and ceramics. In July 2003, she participated in the art exhibition "Estate in Galleria" at the Poliedro art gallery in Trieste, with the participation of critic Sergio Brossi. In 2010 and 2011, she exhibited with the cultural association "Artesette" at the Trieste Maritime Station during the Barcolana regatta. In the spring of 2012 and in October of the same year, her work was again exhibited in Trieste at the "Sale Cornucopia Art." She exhibited in Ronchi dei Legionari between 2012 and 2013, before returning to Trieste with a show in February 2013 at the Seven Art hall. The artist continued her exhibition career by participating in events such as “Vele Marine” (Trieste, 2013) and “ArTi Art Show Room” (Gorizia, 2014), before exhibiting on the island of Ventotene in the summer of 2014 and in Milan in June 2015 at the “Federica Galli” foundation. A versatile artist, capable of employing a variety of techniques, her artistic production has primarily focused on an informal and abstract-expressionist aesthetic.
