Description of the work
Description of the work
In a tangle of colors and shapes, Kjeld Ulrich's work presents itself before our eyes through an abstract composition. Abstract art consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive an absolute concept. The great masters of the 20th century, from Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, succeeded in purifying the image to achieve a sense of purity, order, and geometry, returning to the essence of forms. Essential colors translate these disjointed images into emotions and instinct. Regardless of the artist's genre, it is important to note that in these works, the artist employed the technique of lithography, an artistic technique used to reproduce multiple copies of an artwork. The difference with printing lies in the artist's hand. The term derives from the Greek "lithos" (stone) and "graphia" (writing), as it was initially created on slabs of limestone. The technique exploits the mutual repulsion between aqueous and fatty materials. The artist traces a drawing with a grease pen on a specially prepared, thick stone. This drawing must mirror the intended representation. As the ink is drawn over the stone, the watery parts of the stone from the initial treatment repel the ink, which settles only on the drawing. When pressed, the paper absorbs only the ink previously applied to the drawing. Precisely because this technique offers the painter great freedom, it is the closest to a true drawing. Thanks to multiple layers, lithographs of various colors can be created, each color requiring a separate press.
Stylistically, the Danish artist creates an original composition in which various subjects of different natures blend together in the drawing. The reference to the earth and plants is nevertheless explicit in the work; the cactus depicted with its pot next to the watering can evoke a natural dimension and the connection between nature and humanity. All this is further emphasized by the muddy colors used for the work, used as actual splashes of color that do not define the drawing.
Kjeld Ulrich is a Danish artist born in 1942 in Odense. His works have been exhibited internationally and held in permanent collections. He uses a wide variety of media, including collage, acrylic, and oil, for his compositions. Ulrich also creates expressive abstract montages with recurring motifs of women, flowers, and text. The artist's minimalist lines are enhanced by monochromatic or sparse color palettes, offering glimpses into the artist's mind and his unique visual landscape.
