Description of the work
Description of the work
The patinated bronze sculpture, just one meter tall, portrays a half-length "Young Girl," like an ancient torso, missing arms and legs. Her head is held erect, her gaze fixed, lost in the undefined space before her. A veil covers her head, falling in a short, wide fold under her chin, while a longer, ribbon-like edge folds, abruptly interrupted, under her left breast. The energetic twist of her torso lends a vital momentum to the figure.
The decorative covering imbues the work with allusions, evocations, and references to the local context (in the imprints of the scales of small, dried pine cones, which recall the natural environment; and in the hemp rigging surrounding the trunk, reminiscent of the costume of religious confraternities), in a mythical dimension (the reference is to Proserpina, the legendary daughter of Ceres, abducted by Pluto on the shores of Lake Pergusa near Enna). The imaginary content is rendered with a realistic, dry, and sharp language, particularly attentive to the figure's anatomy and sensitive to the luminescent effects of the bronze surface over which the light glides.
The work qualifies as an allegory of youth, escape and loss, eternal return and waiting.
