Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
The celebration of the simplicity of peasant life, imbued with essential and primary values, is directly reflected in Luigi Bassano's style, which is precisely characterized by primality and essentiality. This translates into a bold and robust expressionism that leads the artist to simplify forms. The composition is constructed with essential lines with a structural function, highlighted by thick black lines and a pronounced broken rhythm. The exaltation of simplicity leads to the repetition of types in a refined stereotype. The faces are masks with deliberately rough and plain features, the houses are simple solids. The folksy nature of the representation is also reflected in the application of color, which consists of thick, dense brushstrokes of muted colors, predominantly in shades of blue and brown.
Luigi Bassano, Genoa 1900 – 1990. He attended courses at the Accademia Ligustica in Genoa starting in 1918. From 1924 he exhibited at the Rome Quadrennial and at various national exhibitions: Milan, Turin, Naples, Florence; in the same year he participated in the Genoese group exhibition Alere Flamman.
He was a member of the "Gruppo 900 Ligure" (Ligurian Group) along with painters Salietti, Rodocanachi, and Saccorotti, as well as sculptors Francesco Messina and Arturo Martini. His first solo exhibition was held in Genoa (Galleria Valle) in 1928. He also held numerous exhibitions abroad, including in New York, Washington, and various South American capitals. His works are exhibited at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Genoa-Nervi.
In 1932 he was called to join the “Ligurian Group of the 900”.
