Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconographic subject of Christ's face has ancient origins and is connected to the legend of Veronica. The episode in which Christ's true likeness was imprinted on a cloth used by a woman to wipe his face is also recounted in the Gospels. This woman was identified as Veronica, likely due to the similarity with the Latin words "Vera Icon." Since the early Christian era, the face of Christ has been the object of particular veneration. Its depiction has pervaded the entire history of Western art. From the first iconic representations of the early Christian and early Middle Ages, we gradually moved on to increasingly naturalistic (beginning with the Renaissance) or realistic (typical of Flemish art) depictions.
As we can see in this work, Leonardo Lucchi begins with a classical conception of sculpture, based on the representation of the human figure. Lucchi possesses remarkable sculptural technique, as can be seen in the way he delineates the features of Christ's face. The exaltation of the subject's plastic qualities is a fundamental recurring feature in Lucchi's sculptural style, and so even in this simple face, the plastic presence is so strong that it creates a concrete space around itself. Although Lucchi's sculptural conception is committed to a classicist and naturalistic register, signs of modernity are nevertheless discernible in his work. This is particularly evident in this work compared to other sculptures: the modeling of the material, unlike classical purity, favors a living surface, vibrant with interactions with space and existence. Christ's face with its large, sunken eyes takes on an expressionist aesthetic, while the wavy lines of his beard and hair introduce a highly dynamic rhythm. All this presupposes a modern approach to sculptural work that extends from Rodin onwards.
Leonardo Lucchi was born in Cesena in 1952. He trained at the Istituto d'Arte per la Ceramica in Faenza. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and received important commissions. Examples include the Risen Christ and the Stations of the Cross for the Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity in Singapore, the coins minted by the Republic of San Marino for the bicentenary of the French Revolution, and, in Cesena, the important bronze groups preserved in the cathedral.
