Description of the work
Description of the work
Luigi Sonzini's artistic production necessarily stems from Spatialism. Born in 1946 with Lucio Fontana's Manifiesto Blanco, this movement posed, first and foremost, a question of how artworks are perceived. The aim of Spatialism was to definitively transcend the surface of the canvas for a perceptual experience that definitively engaged Space. Hence, the application of electronic technical devices, used for their ability to radiate energy, or the use of gestural techniques, such as holes or cuts, aimed at breaking through the surface of the work and invading it with the accidentality of reality.
Luigi Sonzini's path to definitively transcend the dimension of the artwork and invade reality draws inspiration from the great masters of Spatialism and Arte Povera. Indeed, the artist draws on the concept of waste materials to create a new perceptual stimulus through the use of various combustible surfaces (recalling the poetics of Alberto Burri). Yet at the same time, Luigi Sonzini is also deeply aware of Fontana, in his piercing of the support. Luigi Sonzini's originality lies in his ability to combine concrete gesture with spatial concepts into a new and creative artistic entity. Formally, too, the aesthetic impact of his works is remarkable, with the burn marks arranged in various combinations on a white, minimalist surface.
Luigi Sonzini was born in Milan in 1942. He graduated from the Art School and then studied at the Faculty of Architecture in Milan. His first paintings date back to that period, in which he attempted new figurative expressions. Then, to pursue his career as an industrialist, living in solitude in the fog of the Po Valley, he abandoned, or rather slowed down, his artistic activity. These, however, were his decisive years; he matured, finding no fulfillment in the stress of work. From his marriage, only the bitterness of a distant son remained, and the sudden death of his father dug deep into him a despair over the transience of earthly things. This resulted in an existential crisis and forced him to completely rethink the values on which to base his life, and he dedicated himself to self-liberation by giving vent to his creativity. Sonzini has held a prestigious solo exhibition in Milan and participated in private group exhibitions in Italy, Germany, France, the United States, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia. He lived and painted in Porto Valtravaglia (VA), in Via Borgato 9, where he died on 21 May 2017.
