Description of the work
Description of the work
The 100 parchments with Dante's drawings made by Botticelli at the end of the 15th century were commissioned by
Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici called the Popolano (second cousin of Lorenzo the Magnificent),
friend and patron of Sandro Botticelli. Botticelli's Dantesque work, created over a period of time that goes
from 1480 to 1495, has been divided into two groups for centuries. The first, with the largest number of parchments (85) is
preserved in the new Kupferstichkabinett of the Kulturforum, following the reunification of the State Museums of
Berlin; the second with seven parchments is kept in the Vatican Apostolic Library.
To execute this immense work, Botticelli uses different tools: for the fundamental lines of the
composition is helped by "metallic styles", even silver ones, while to specify the contours he uses the "pen" and
inks that give that sometimes light yellow, or gold or black color.
