The Italian Encyclopedia of Sciences, Letters and Arts (abbreviated to Enciclopedia Italiana ), commonly known as La Treccani , is the most famous encyclopedia in the Italian language , edited by the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia , founded in Rome on February 18, 1925 by Giovanni Treccani and Giovanni Gentile . The first edition was published in thirty-five volumes, plus one volume of indexes, from 1929 to 1937, followed by ten appendices over the years. Treccani is considered to be probably the greatest Italian publishing enterprise in the cultural field as well as one of the most important encyclopedias of the 20th century, together with the 11th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica and the Enciclopedia universal illustrada europeo-americana
