Description of the work
The collection includes 9 paintings by the artist Salvador Dalì
DALÌ, Salvador (1904-1989). Biblia Sacra vulgatae editionis. Sixti V pont. max. iussu recognita et Clementis VIII authoritate edita imaginibus Salvador Dalì exornata. Milan, Rizzoli, 1967.
5 vols. in folio (485 x 368 mm). Vol. 1: 380 [16] pp. [21] plates. Vol. 2: 362 [18] pp. [21] plates. Vol. 3: 346 [22] pp. [19] plates. Vol. 4: 449 [21] pp. [19] plates. Vol. 5: 435 [21] pp. [25] plates. A total of 105 plates printed with a mixed technique (colour lithography and silkscreen) on cardboard, each protected by a Japanese paper backing. Text in Latin, printed in Roman type taken from the types engraved by Francesco Griffi for Aldus Manutius' Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. Publisher's binding in hazelnut full morocco, spine with five raised bands and six compartments, the second with a gilt title, the others decorated with gilt floral arrangements; ivory moiré silk border; gilt upper edge, the others with burls. Each volume is housed in a single slipcase with hazelnut morocco borders and light green moiré silk boards. Some slight signs of age on the bindings, but in excellent condition.
No. 80 of 1,499 copies of the "Luxus" edition printed on laid paper. An imposing and luxurious edition of the Bible, splendidly illustrated by Dalí with a suite of watercolor drawings and other techniques (including one he invented, which involved shooting ink capsules at the pages with an old blunderbuss). The work was commissioned from Dalí in 1963 by Giuseppe Albaretto, a devout man and fervent supporter of the Catholic Church, who hoped this would bring his artist friend closer to God. Dalí completed the illustrations in 1969. Their style is rich in both the variety of content and the colors; some splendid plates also feature details in glossy black or gold.
