The collage, and in general the importance of the material elements of her work, is the most characteristic part of Esther Cuesta's work. As with collage in particular, which is mainly used by means of glued paper and dyed with dyes and pigments, there is no need to occasionally implement something consistent with the painting and inseparable from it, which is decisive in the plastic plan, the compositional structure and the general naturalness of the work. This circumstance, maintained throughout the majority of its artistic trajectory, has made this trajectory one of the most coherent, personalized and interesting of Asturian plastic art.
I think that for Esther This the "papier col" must assume the same thing that was assumed by the cubists when they invented it: the break with a previous naturalist system transforming the representation through the juxtaposition of two different realities, which is the fundamental principle of the collage. For this reason, in his work he remains, as he also asked and in a certain way for the cubists in his time, it is ambiguous between the figuration and abstraction that he usually produces, thus reconciling the different realities. As Max Ernst once said, it is not only the color that makes the collage.
This technique determines the frontal and anti-illusionist concept of the plastic surfaces and the complete pictorial games of elaboration whereby it is possible to have short and adhering shapes, but above all it takes the body back, suggesting dark, desteñed, washed, narrowed, wrinkled or Examination, superpositions of shape and color, everything that suggests textures and qualities, in the coexistence of signs and abstractions such as figurative rests, a process that on the other hand alters the compositional order of the painting. A painting that has recently been enriched with the use of methacrylate or glass with which it achieves greater brightness and transparency, including the placement of the work in light boxes.
For this exhibition motivated by obtaining the Ayuntamiento de Valdés prize in the National Certamen de Luarca, Esther Cuesta had the good idea of ​​reuniting the works that had been selected in the certainty, since she began her participation in the year 1993, until I obtained it award in 2017. In this journey, more attentive to the evolution than to the formal quality of each moment, the "edades" of hierro, stone and earth, the materials but without having encountered the definitive path, series of the fish, the cities, the fingers of the light..., until "The bail of the lights and las noches", one Very interesting and attractive painting in the creative line of his recent exhibition, which took place last month at the Amaga gallery in Gijón.
