Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
In his graphic works, painter Lamberto Ciavatta always maintains a certain expressionistic verve, but in this case it is based on a synthesis of the subject that relies on the elegance of the line. It is the graphic sign that constructs the figures in a tormented and nervous manner, while at the same time highlighting the volumes. The figures, thus, are subjected to a process of geometricization thanks to the line that breaks them down into angular sections and a multifaceted surface.
Lamberto Ciavatta was born in Nettuno in 1908 and passed away in 1981. He was the director of the International Academy of the Nude in Rome. Throughout his career, he exhibited his works in numerous exhibitions not only in Italy, but also throughout Europe and the Middle East. His paintings are held in collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Municipal Gallery in Dublin, the Royal Museum of Art in Brussels, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Zurich Museum, the Moscow Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid, and the Museo Ciudad Bolivar.
