Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Much of Lauro Bolondi's pictorial production is dedicated to his native places, the views of San Polo d'Enza and the Emilian Apennines.
The artist Lauro Bolondi's style is characterized by a fully mature, post-Impressionist approach. His compositions are all constructed through color, and his brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the landscape or still life, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, breaks down the space into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life in the subject. Thus, within a substantially two-dimensional surface, compressed in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the painter with broad, dense brushstrokes. Chromatically, moreover, the entire surface of the work is blended with a unifying palette, usually tending toward brown.
Lauro Bolondi, originally from San Polo D'Enza, passed away in Milan at the age of 90. He was a very popular figure, partly because, in addition to being a painter, he was a fairly successful boxer in his youth, earning the nickname "Alì." As a painter, he graduated from the Reggio Emilia School of Art and furthered his studies at the Brera Academy. His works, primarily depicting landscapes of the Emilian Apennines, enjoyed a following and success beyond Italy's borders.
