Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this work, artist Lella Burzio creates a portrait using an extraordinary lithographic technique, capturing the subject's features with vivid clarity and realistic precision. It is a portrait of incredible objective force, its evocative power fueled by the negative composition. The play of shadows is also remarkable, further highlighting the extraordinary precision of detail in the almost photographic rendering of the face and the narration of the artisan's work.
Beginning her painting studies at the age of eight under the guidance of Angiola Meucci, a student of Delleani, Lella Burzio has never abandoned the field of art, which she has furthered, completing her artistic studies and mastering techniques such as mosaic, restoration, and decoration, and graduating in architecture. Since 1964, she has held numerous solo exhibitions, which have continued uninterrupted for over thirty years. Since 1978, she has combined her painting with teaching at her studio in Piazza Statuto in Turin, supplementing it with seminars, art meetings, and visits to exhibitions and art galleries. For fifteen years, she has taught courses in Art History at the Università Popolare di Torino and given cultural lectures for various associations.
