Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The work demonstrates Lello Barresi's extraordinary technical prowess even in its graphic composition. The formal means used to delineate the subject are few: a sinuous line and a few areas of black. The subject undergoes a process of extreme synthesis, but Barresi's drawing skill is such that, with just a few strokes, the nude body achieves full form. Indeed, the two female figures are characterized by a true plastic exaltation. Furthermore, the composition is extremely evocative in its atmosphere of enigma and mystery.
Lello M. Barresi was born in Palermo in 1932. An artist with an academic background, he was initially a student of Carrà. For a decade, he lived in Southeast Asia, where he taught Western art history and, on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, performed diplomatic duties for the Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta. From 1954, he devoted himself primarily to painting, initially focusing on composition and figuration. From 1970, his focus shifted to the female figure. He passed away in 2001.
