Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Artist Lello Barresi has often demonstrated great eclecticism. In this work, he sets aside his lyrical landscapes to focus on another of his favorite subjects: the female figure. The subject is presented in a decidedly expressionistic manner. The artist does not seek physiognomic truth, but bases the composition on movement and dynamism. This is particularly evident in the definition of the hair, its abstract movement, constructed on a frenetic rhythm of curved lines. Furthermore, the artist, always aiming for an expressionistic representation, creates a space made of pure forms and colors, in a perfectly harmonious and balanced polychromy.
Lello M. Barresi was born in Palermo in 1932. An artist with an academic background, he was initially a student of Carrà. For a decade, he lived in Southeast Asia, where he taught Western art history and, on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, performed diplomatic duties for the Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta. From 1954, he devoted himself primarily to painting, initially focusing on composition and figuration. From 1970, his focus shifted to the female figure. He passed away in 2001.
