Description of the work
Description of the work
The work in question presents a very particular type of composition, in which the still life is combined with the landscape, in a harmonious fusion that unites a lyrical naturalism with the reproduction of objects from life.
The painting displays excellent quality both in composition and technique. The execution of the work exudes a classical air, drawing inspiration from the Italian pictorial tradition, particularly the Renaissance. The composition is highly dynamic, constructed within a rational spatial framework, creating an ideal and harmonious balance between the foreground elements and the open background. Thus, the still life in the foreground is perfectly framed within the room, while the viewer's gaze is drawn to the sweeping landscape in a perfect aerial perspective. Indeed, the artist depicts a portion of the landscape in the window, fading naturally into the horizon, as the space is measured through subtle shifts of tone that frame the entire scene in a coherent and unified atmosphere. Consequently, the role of light is fundamental, creating a suggestive interplay of shadows and nuances. This artist's pictorial style is very diligent in obtaining a perfect naturalistic rendering of the landscape and realistic representation of the objects in the foreground, alternating at times with a more pictorial touch to give greater freshness to the composition.
Léon Pierre Félix was born in 1869 in Périgueux. In 1888 he left for Paris and studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts. He received a medal in 1898, an honorable mention at the Paris Exposition in 1900, and a medal in 1903. Appointed official painter of the Navy in 1910, he decorated the battleship Paris around 1912. He received the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor on May 26, 1914. He first taught drawing at Orange College in 1915, then at the Lycée de Nice between 1916 and 1917. A portraitist and genre painter, Léon Pierre Félix frequently participated in the Salons of Périgueux and Paris between the two wars, where he received two honorary prizes, in 1921 and 1936. In 1937, he graduated with honors from the International Exposition in Paris. He died in Périgueux on January 5, 1940.
