Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The works of Laonardo Bazzaro demonstrate the artist's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely compressed into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the subject, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, fleshing out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them. The sensory aspect, therefore, is completely transcended in a complex conception of pictorial practice in which the artist's gestures also play a fundamental role. Chromatically, the entire surface of the work is blended with a balanced palette of references and correspondences, with a preference, in this case, for a warm, brown impasto.
Leonardo Bazzaro was born in Milan in 1853. Brother of the sculptor Ernesto, he began studying under Gaetano Fasanotti. He then enrolled at the Academy, where he attended every course, becoming Giuseppe Bertini's favorite pupil. In 1873, he participated for the first time in the annual Brera Fine Arts Exhibition. In 1875, he won the Fumagalli Prize with After a Duel. Three years later, the painter won the Grotti Prize with A Sad Office – Chapel of Santa Maria delle Grazie. In the 1880s, he began painting outdoors. He drew inspiration from the lagoon landscapes and Alpine valleys of Lombardy and the Aosta Valley. In 1896, he moved to Gignese (Novara), favoring intimate themes or those related to country life. The following year, he exhibited for the first time at the Venice Biennale. In the years that followed, his exhibition commitments became increasingly numerous. In fact, in addition to the exhibitions at the Permanente, the Promotrici of Genoa and Turin, and the Venice Biennale, he participated in the Buenos Aires International (1910) and the Universal Exhibition of San Francisco (1915). Leonardo Bazzaro died in his nephew Ettore's Milanese home in 1937.
