The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.

This work is part of Leonardo Melchionda's Informal production. This phase, in particular, was inspired by the influences of American Abstract Expressionism. The entire creative process of the painting is guided by a powerful gesturality, expressed through various types of brushstrokes: broad strokes, thin streaks, and drips. These are pure emotions and spirituality transformed into gesture and matter. This overwhelming emotionality, however, is governed by a certain sense of chromatic and compositional balance.

Leonardo Melchionda was an artist from Livorno, born in 1936 and died in 2009. His entire pictorial production was expressed in a strong experimental tension that saw him go through various phases from Futurism to Abstractionism up to fully informal outcomes.
