Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. The nude, along with the representation of the female figure in general, is one of the most recurring subjects in Leonardo Pizzanelli's work, expressed in his highly classical and figurative language.
In this "Little Nude," we can also appreciate the artist Leonardo Pizzanelli's masterful technique. The figure, as always in his work, is crafted with a warm manual skill that allows this painter to achieve a completely naturalistic rendering. Thus, the child's face is so detailed that it almost reaches hyperrealism. The rest of the nude also displays a softness of touch that makes the volumes both plastic and soft. The forms are rendered with delicate, nuanced shading that makes the contours more vivid and uncertain. However, despite this pursuit of naturalism, which harks back to a classical tradition of painting, we can note a certain elongation of the figure, making the subject even more elegant and refined in its artificiality. This choice seems to hint at a reference to Mannerist art, or, better yet, to certain Flemish painters like Lucas Cranach and his slender, sinuous nudes.
Leonardo Pizzanelli (Torre del Lago 1920 – Florence 1984) was born into an artistic family (his father Ferruccio was also a painter) and trained in Florence, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. His first solo exhibition in Pisa was held in 1942 at the Palazzo alla Giornata; from 1943 to 1947, he frequented the Florentine art scene, which sparked his artistic flair, with landscapes and still lifes, figures, portraits, and nudes, in the typical twentieth-century vein. He then began visiting Paris, Canada, England, and Africa, where he also founded art schools.
