Leoncillo's graphic work reflects his major work as a sculptor and provides important documentation of this great artist's formal exploration. The two works presented here, in fact, can be considered object studies that illustrate the artist's poetics. The chosen subject is the violin, a recurring musical instrument in his artistic output, from traditional still lifes to Cubist decompositions to Arman's assemblages.
The two graphics are very interesting because they show Leoncillo's way of perceiving reality as pure vibration (which would lead to his informal results). The violin is depicted from different perspectives to fully explore and assimilate its form. However, this form, still present and concrete, almost dissolves into constant movement and interaction with space. Leoncillo renders all of this with an extraordinary capacity for synthesis, manifested in an extremely fluid graphic style. All the violin's plastic qualities are transformed into movement and life by the artist's touch.
Leoncillo Leonardi (Spoleto, 1915 – Rome, 1968) used exclusively ceramics throughout his career as the medium of choice for his sculptures (glazed, glazed, stoneware, engobes), inventing and manipulating formal and chromatic techniques and processes with unparalleled originality. Making a clean break from his initial naturalistic, expressionist, and neo-Cubist production, between 1956 and 1957 he made the great leap toward Informalism, of which he can be considered one of the leading exponents in the plastic art scene in Italy.
