Description of the work
Description of the work
The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who attempt it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer. The clown has also been favored by many painters for another formal reason. Indeed, his flamboyant makeup and colorful clothing offer painters a pretext for creating original color harmonies.
Painter Lia Foggetti's style, in much of her work, is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of reality and communicate it on canvas in a vibrant and dramatic manner. For this reason, through the application of color, the artist develops a highly synthesised process that reduces her subjects to dense, material layers of paint, in which the painter's own emotion is also a key feature, conveyed through her agitated gestures. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of Lia Foggetti's painting. This power is also based on a specific aesthetic choice that reaffirms the dramatic tone of her work, namely, a preference for a pronounced monochromatic palette, from which the images emerge almost with difficulty, establishing a struggle with the paint.
A native of Spoleto, Lia Foggetti has lived and worked in Rapallo for many years. A painter, sculptor, ceramist, and theater set designer, she has been actively involved in exhibitions since her debut, participating in national and international festivals and competitions. A multifaceted artist, she is a "primitive" painter who eschews tools and paints almost exclusively with her fingers. Lia Foggetti has illustrated poetry and fairy tales and collaborated on visual projects for various foundations and associations. She has exhibited in solo and group shows at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Paris, Malta, Quebec, Toronto, Tokyo, Mexico City, and the USA, among others, earning important prizes and awards.
