Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In this work, Libero Meledina creates a clear example of expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an almost brutal exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The brushstrokes delineate the forms in a very tormented and nervous manner. Color is used according to an emotional and spiritual interpretation, without any connection to reality. Delving even further into detail, we can see how Meledina depicts the houses and the surrounding landscape with a series of almost gestural pictorial marks, vertical or diagonal, and dynamic chromatic fields. The application of color is dense and material.
Libero Meledina was a painter originally from Sassari, born in 1918 and died in 1995, considered the founder of Sardinian Realism. He attended the Sassari School of Art, the Higher Institute of Art in Monza, and the Brera Academy in Milan. Over the years, Meledina developed a more personal style of painting, more representative of his time; this maturation of thought engaged Meledina in figurations and images of time passing, the advancement of humanity, and social progress. His works are held in public and private collections in Cagliari, Sassari, Nuoro, Oristano, Mantua, Genoa, Naples, Ferrara, Florence, and in America.
