Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
Liliana Conti Cammarata's etchings fully reflect the spirit of historical Surrealism. The appearance of the subject (itself formed by the juxtaposition of heterogeneous elements) is sudden and alienating. Even formally, Liliana Conti Cammarata respects the Surrealist tradition in her hyperrealistic, illusory, and suggestive language. Furthermore, the setting—a desolate land covered with wooden planks like a stage (Dalí)—and the presence of the bowler hat (Magritte) seem to be a tribute to the great masters of Surrealism.
Liliana Conti Cammmarata was born in Caltanissetta and lives and works in Palermo. After attending the Academy in Palermo, she completed her studies in Salzburg at the International School, where she studied under Emilio Vedova. She specialized in engraving through experimental courses directed by Riccardo Licata and the lithography course directed by Luca Crippa. She collaborates with the International Center of Graphics in Venice. Her works are held at the "Gabinetto delle Stampe" of the Panizzi Library in Reggio Emilia.
