Description of the work
Description of the work
Social themes in art began to gain prominence in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the spread of social questions throughout European societies. The work of painters such as Millet and Daumier, for example, favored subjects related to life in the fields, factory work, or strikes. In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso.
Lino Casa's pictorial language is strongly linked, as we can see in this canvas, to a conception of realist art, tied to social issues and a focus on a world of the poor and destitute. This is reflected not only in the choice of subject but also in its interpretation. The composition, in fact, is based on a lived-in pictorial style, charged with existential vibrations that imbue the representation with a strong emotional charge. The thick brushstrokes construct the image in a balance based on a chromatic palette of grays and browns.
The painter Lino Casa is an artist who can essentially be defined as belonging to the realist school. His favorite subjects are humble people. Formally, he is a painter who draws on a post-impressionist tradition in his complex pictorial construction of the image.
