Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.

The composition's purpose is to create a disturbing and enigmatic situation through the juxtaposition of various inconsistent elements in a seemingly plausible setting. Indeed, even the perfect formal execution, based on meticulous and hyperrealistic drawing, and the organization of space based on impeccable perspective, result in an excess of rationality that veers toward the surreal. The use of etching enhances the drawing, which is the sole formal means through which the composition was created.

Lino Mannocci, an artist from Viareggio, born in 1945, is one of the protagonists of Metacosa, an artistic group founded in the 1980s with the aim of conducting a profound investigation into a poetic and refined figurative language, endowed, at the same time, with pictorial intensity.
